What are Cognitive Skills?

There are seven categories of cognitive skills that, when weak, contribute to struggles with thinking, reading, learning, memory, and attention. Our programs target and strengthen these skills. The cognitive skills that our programs improve include the following:

  • Attention: Sustained attention is the ability to stay on task for an extended period of time; selective attention is the ability to stay focused and not get distracted; divided attention is the ability to handle more than one task at a time.

  • Long-term Memory: The ability to recall information that was stored in the past.

  • Logic & Reasoning: The ability to reason, form concepts, and solve problems using unfamiliar information or new procedures.

  • Auditory processing (phonemic awareness): The ability to analyze, blend, and segment sounds.

  • Visual processing: The ability to perceive, analyze, and think in visual images.

  • Working/ Short Term Memory:  The ability to apprehend and hold information in immediate awareness while simultaneously performing a mental task.

  • Processing Speed:The ability to perform simple or complex cognitive tasks.
